On Wednesday, July 15, the International Cricket Council (ICC) unveiled a new format for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, which is scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia next year.
With the tournament expanding from 10 to 14 teams, a new three-stage format has been introduced to deliver more competitive cricket and enhance the experience for fans. The tournament has been divided into three rounds before the semi-finals and the final.
On that note, let’s take a look at the new format for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. (As quoted by the ICC official website)
Round 1 – The campaign will start with a Super Series comprising the three lowest-ranked of the 14 qualified teams in a round-robin format. The team that finishes top of the Super Series will advance to the next stage of the competition.
Round 2 (30 matches) – The second round of the campaign will feature 12 teams competing across 30 matches. The teams will be divided into two groups of six and play in a round-robin format. The top three teams from each group, along with the next best-placed team across both groups, will advance to the Super 7 stage.
Round 3, Super 7 (21 matches) – The Super 7 stage will consist of 21 round-robin matches, with the top four teams making it to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, the team finishing first in the Super 7 standings will face the fourth-placed side, while the second-placed team will take on the third-placed team.
Semi-finals: The winners of the two semi-finals will advance to the final for the silverware.
ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028: New Format
Group Stage (30 matches) – The 20 participating teams will now be divided into five groups of four, replacing the previous format of four groups of five used at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 10 stage
Super 10 (20 matches) – This round will have two groups of five, playing a round-robin format. The winners of each Super 10 group will qualify directly for the semi-finals.
Eliminators (2 matches) – The remaining two semi-final spots will be decided through a new Eliminators round, with the second-placed teams from each Super 10 group facing the third-placed teams from the opposite group.
The winners of the Eliminators will complete the semi-final line-up, while the semi-finals and final will continue to follow the existing format.
