Former Mumbai Indians cricketer Tirumalasetti Suman has questioned the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for picking a different support staff for the ongoing three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, which got underway on Thursday, July 23.
Notably, BCCI has picked VVS Laxman as the head coach for the three-match Zimbabwe series with Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Sunil Joshi appointed as batting and bowling coaches respectively. On the other hand, Gautam Gambhir and his support staff have been rested.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Suman has questioned the need for resting Gautam Gambhir and co. when they were already rested during the IPL 2026 season, adding that there is a long gap after the Zimbabwe series for the next series to commence.
“For this series, India have an entirely new support staff. This is quite surprising because the same thing should continue for all the white-ball series. This is strange. These coaches (Gambhir and Co.) were not part of any IPL team and had a two-and-a-half-month gap. They played only ten matches after the IPL. Why do you need rest? After this, there is a gap till the Sri Lanka series again. So this is a big question mark,” Suman said in a video on his YouTube channel.
Shifting our focus to the details of the first T20I between Zimbabwe and India, the former batted first and posted a mediocre total of 125/7 in 20 overs. Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav scalped two wickets apiece. In the chase, India finished off the game in 13.2 overs with seven wickets in hand. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was the wrecker-in-chief with a 50-run knock.
