“There were some doubts in my head” - Ravi Ashwin heaps praise on Shubman Gill’s captaincy

Former Indian off-spinner and commentator Ravi Ashwin has showered praise on the Indian captain Shubman Gill for elevating his captaincy skills. Notably, his comments came after India’s eight-wicket win over the West Indies in Trivandrum on Sunday, September 27.

Speaking on his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’, Ashwin asserted that he had a few doubts about Gill’s captaincy. However, he was happily and pleasantly surprised to see his captaincy skills improve.

“His captaincy is also getting better day by day. There were some doubts in my head, but we have to compliment him. I am happily and pleasantly surprised by how his captaincy has gone up. He led GT well too this year, and he is showing it with India as well. It is a great quality to have,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Further, Ashwin praised Gill, the batter, stating that he would come close to Virat Kohli’s records if he manages to play as many games. However, Ashwin also raised a few concerns about the future of ODI cricket.

“Shubman Gill is a complete batter in the next generation of Indian batters. Between him and the rest, there is a bit of daylight. He is that good. I think going forward, he will come close to Virat if he gets that many games. Unfortunately for Gill, ODI cricket’s existence is in slight doubt. ODI cricket suits him a lot. But ODI cricket might not happen as much as it did when Virat was playing. It is unfortunate,” he added.

For the unversed, Gill scored a match-winning century, smacking 110 runs off 108 balls with 13 fours and a six. India will next take on the West Indies in the second ODI of the three-game series in Guwahati on Wednesday, September 30.
