Former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar has expressed his views on the Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir, stating that he doesn’t have a big role in the Indian team’s results, adding that the players have a much bigger say in the results.
While Team India won two ICC titles in white-ball formats, they have suffered Test series defeats at home against New Zealand and South Africa. Speaking in an exclusive conversation with RevSports, the former skipper reckoned that the head coach’s job is limited to off the field.
“A coach can play a part in planning and strategising for the match and the training sessions. But that is where his role ends. Then the players have to implement those plans on the ground. If the players don’t implement them, that determines victory or defeat. So, the coach’s job is limited in the sense that he can do only so much outside the field. The players have to implement the plans,” Vengsarkar said on RevSportz.
Further, the former Indian cricketer showered praise on the Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar for taking some good decisions during his tenure. Notably, Agarkar is reportedly not seeking a contract extension, and his tenure as India’s chief selector is likely to end on October 4.
“He has done a good job and taken some good decisions. We have won two World Cups and the Champions Trophy. So, that’s a good thing. That’s a good performance by the selectors as well. Selectors don’t get that much credit, which I think they should. Ajit deserves credit for what he has done,” he added.
India will next take part in the Asian Games 2026 and the white-ball series at home against the West Indies.
