Indian Test captain Shubman Gill dropped two spots, and ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah slid one spot in the newly updated Test Rankings by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday, September 2.
On the other hand, India’s No.3 batter Devdutt Padikkal moved to the 54th spot in the latest ICC Batting Rankings, surging five spots. Padikkal scored 328 runs across two Tests at an average of 109.33 during India’s recent tour of Sri Lanka. He came into the series as Sai Sudharsan’s replacement and grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
Meanwhile, Gill, who scored one half-century across three innings on the Sri Lanka tour, slid to the ninth rank in the batting rankings while the Indian keeper-batter Rishabh Pant continues to be the highest-ranked Indian batter at the seventh spot.
Further, Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal remains at the 11th rank. Moving to the bowlers’ rankings, Bumrah slid further to the third rank with Mitchell Starc and Matt Henry occupying the top two positions, respectively.
Sri Lankan middle-order batter Sonal Dinusha, who scored two centuries in the second Test in Colombo against India, moved up 29 positions to reach 25th in the rankings for batters. England bowler Ollie Robinson rocketed to the fifth rank after his splendid performances across two Tests against Pakistan.
Bumrah missed the tour of Sri Lanka owing to an impact injury on his knee. However, he has been picked in India’s squad for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. His availability for the series is subject to clearance.
India will next tour New Zealand for a two-match Test series later this year, which is part of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
