Shubman Gill is probably up there with the best players in the world and obviously a very talented guy: Virat Kohli

Indian talismanic batter Virat Kohli has showered praise on the Indian ODI skipper Shubman Gill, who scored an exceptional 110-run knock off 108 balls with 13 fours and a six in the first ODI against the West Indies in Trivandrum on Sunday, September 27.

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony after propelling the Indian team to an eight-wicket win with his impressive unbeaten 139-run knock, Kohli termed Gill one of the best ODI batters at the moment.

“There’s a reason why he’s leading the team. He’s got the right perspective, as I said, to look at the game in the way that making the team win from different situations. So when you play with a guy like that, it’s not very difficult to string together a partnership, because he knows what needs to be done, I know what needs to be done,” Virat Kohli said after the first ODI.

Gill and Kohli stitched a 151-run stand for the second wicket in the 296-run chase. While Gill scored a 110-run knock, Gill smacked an unbeaten 139-run knock as India sealed the deal in 41.4 overs with eight wickets in hand.

“You could have a conversation here and there based on your experience in terms of the areas we could probably hit, but he’s the top ODI batter in the world. There’s not much that needs to be said to him. It’s just about stringing in partnerships and making sure we do justice to the ability and the talent we have in this team. And he’s probably up there with the best players in the world and obviously a very talented guy. So not having to say much to him while batting. In the field, when he needs my help, I’m always available,” he added.

The second ODI of the three-game series will take place at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday, September 30.
