Indian skipper Shreyas Iyer has expressed his disappointment over India’s fifth consecutive loss under his captaincy as they suffered a nine-wicket defeat to England in the fourth T20I at the County Ground in Bristol on Thursday, July 9.
Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony after the defeat, Iyer reckoned that 158 wasn’t a perfect total on the board, adding that his bowlers tried their best, but couldn’t execute the lengths consistently.
“It was a disappointing one. 158 wasn’t a perfect total on the board and eventually we saw how quickly they chased it down. When we came out to bowl I just asked the bowlers to repeat the length as much as possible because top of middle and leg stump were hard to get away. I think we were a bit short on our execution. When we tried change of pace or something else they got boundaries,” Iyer said after the game.
While Iyer was happy with his own performance, he was disappointed that it didn’t come in the winning cause. Moreover, he insisted that the team is in transition phase and they will make a lot of mistakes, but it’s important to learn quickly.
“Happy with my performance but when it’s not in a winning cause, it goes to the side. So want to contribute to wins. This is a transition phase and we will be making a lot of mistakes. A lot of youngsters were playing in these conditions for the first time. Mistakes will be important to realise how we need to adapt in overseas conditions. Important to learn quickly,” he concluded.
Delving into the details of the game, India batted first and posted 158/7 in 20 overs. Shreyas Iyer was the top-scorer with an unbeaten 80-run knock off 49 balls with four fours and five sixes. Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue scalped two wickets apiece.
In the second innings, England sealed the deal with nine wickets in hand in 13.5 overs. Phil Salt (59* off 42) and Harry Brook (79* off 35) were the star players in the chase as England sealed the series 3-0.
