According to a report published on The Indian Express, the third and final ODI against England at Lord’s on Sunday, July 19, could be the Indian talismanic batter Rohit Sharma’s last international match.
The report further mentioned that the BCCI Senior Selection Committee has already informed Hitman that they have decided to move on from him after the England ODI series. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is keen to give youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal more opportunities.
“The selectors have informed Rohit that he does not figure in their scheme of things after the England tour, and they are moving on from him after this series. He wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court,” said a BCCI source.
It’s important to note that the opening batter has already bid adieu to the T20Is and Tests. While he retired from the T20Is on June 29, 2024, after leading India to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title victory, he hung up his boots from the longest format of the game on May 7, 2025, ahead of the England tour.
Moreover, the selection committee also removed Rohit as ODI captain, replacing him with Shubman Gill. In the second ODI against England in Cardiff, Rohit could score only 26 runs off 43 balls before Will Jacks dismissed him. In the first ODI, he racked up only 11 runs off 21 balls before Sam Curran dismissed him.
Speaking at the post-match press conference after the second ODI, the Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has backed Rohit to get back to form in the third and final ODI of the series at Lord’s in London.
“I don’t think that a player as big as Rohit (Sharma) can feel any pressure. He’s too good a player to feel that. Yes, he didn’t get runs. I don’t think that makes any difference. Today, it also looked like he’ll probably get a good innings out. But that’s okay,” Kotak said in the post-match press conference.
