Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has clarified that he has no interest in checking social media views and likes, adding that his job is to win trophies for the national team and not chase rankings.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, Gambhir made it clear that he doesn’t want to respond to criticism or worry about how the team’s performances are perceived by social media users.
“My job is to win trophies, not views and likes. That’s all what I care for. Rankings do not matter. We are not struggling. Since the England tour, we have played reasonable Test cricket,” Gambhir said in the pre-match press conference.
India will enter the second Test after securing a 165-run win in the first Test to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. India is ranked fifth in the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 (WTC) standings with a points percentage (PCT) of 53.33%. Australia leads, followed by South Africa, New Zealand, and Bangladesh in the top four.
“The entire focus is about looking forward to the next five days and, more importantly, looking at every session and every hour as well. You don’t control what’s going to happen over the next five days. You can only control what you can control in that first session and that one particular hour,” he noted.
“And that is how we want to see these things as well. It’s not about where we’re going to be at the end of the World Test Championship cycle. It’s about if we can continue to try and win test matches, everything else will take care of itself,” he stated.
“So rather than thinking too much ahead, let’s try and stay in the present. And that is what the beauty of sport is. The more you stay in the present, the more you have the opportunity to get the results in your favor,” he concluded.
