It's not right for anybody to say that Indian bowlers are toothless: Bharat Arun

Former Team India bowling coach Bharat Arun has expressed his disagreement with the statement of current Indian bowlers being termed ‘toothless’ on their recent bowling performances in Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya’s absence.

Notably, the Indian bowlers failed to defend huge targets in the recently concluded ODI series against the West Indies and in the second T20I in Ranchi. Speaking to a select media group on Sony Sports Network, Arun reckoned that it’s unfair to call the Indian bowling unit toothless.

“They’re saying bowlers are toothless, I think it’s, it’s not right for anybody to say that, because the last match when they played, they defended a total, successfully. Yes, previous games, they couldn’t defend a huge total, but the last game was a modest total in T20, which they defended successfully. So, I think it’s okay for teams to fail,” Bharat Arun said in a select media interaction organised by Sony Sports Network.

“And especially in this format, it’s okay for them to fail once in a way because you need to understand, you need to reinvent, and also sometimes one batter getting through in T20 cricket can make all the difference. And so I wouldn’t subscribe to the theory that bowlers are being toothless. Sometimes, yes, of course, the best of bowlers in the world have gone for huge runs in T20 cricket. And that can happen to any bowler,” he added.

Further, the former Indian coach also asserted that there are enough young bowlers in the country who can swing the ball, adding that the selection committee needs to identify those bowlers.

“I beg to differ. I think there are enough young bowlers in India who can swing the ball. It is for the selectors and the team management to identify those bowlers. But if you ask me, are there enough young bowlers who can swing the ball? Yes, there are enough young bowlers who can swing the ball,” Bharat Arun said.
