BCCI gives an update on Ajit Agarkar’s replacement as chief selector

BCCI gives an update on Ajit Agarkar’s replacement as chief selector

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Devajit Saikia, on Thursday, September 24, stated that a decision on the chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s replacement would be taken after October 4.

Notably, Agarkar’s tenure as India’s chief selector is set to conclude on October 4, 2026, as he has chosen not to seek a contract extension. According to a TOI report, former Indian keeper-batter Parthiv Patel is the frontrunner to replace Agarkar as the chief selector.

On the other hand, speaking to PTI, the BCCI Secretary clarified that the board hasn’t made a final decision yet. He added that once the final decision is out by the BCCI, they will announce it officially.

“As far as Ajit Agarkar is concerned, his tenure is going to be over on 4th of October and we have sufficient time till 4th. We are going to take a decision regarding the vacant position which will be there after 4th of October. Once any decision is taken by BCCI, we will definitely announce it in the public domain,” Devajit Saikia told PTI Videos.

As per a PTI report, Agarkar was angry over BCCI’s backing of the talismanic Indian opener Rohit Sharma during the tour of England in July 2026. While Agarkar didn’t want Rohit as part of the ODI set-up, a powerful administrator backed the veteran batter, which didn’t go down well with the outgoing selector.

It’s worth noting that Agarkar was appointed as the chief selector in July 2023. During his stint, India won two consecutive T20 World Cup titles in 2024 and 2026. Also, they clinched the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and emerged as the runners-up in the ODI World Cup 2023 at home.

However, India’s Test side suffered whitewashes at home to New Zealand and South Africa. Further, India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Down Under and also failed to make it to the WTC 2025 final.
