On Friday, July 17, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Devajit Saikia brushed aside all speculations over Rohit Sharma playing his final international game at Lord’s on Sunday, July 19.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Saikia has clarified that there have been no discussions with Rohit Sharma on him playing his last match at Lord’s, adding that he is in the scheme of things for the mega event in 2027.
“There are a lot of speculations going on in the media about Rohit Sharma’s future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday,” Saikia said in a statement to the media.
“Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, the Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match,” the BCCI Secretary added.
According to reports from the Indian Express, Rohit was informed by the BCCI Selection Committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, to step away from the game in a bid to give youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal more opportunities before the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.
“The selectors have informed Rohit that he does not figure in their scheme of things after the England tour, and they are moving on from him after this series. He wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court,” said a BCCI source.
It’s important to note that Rohit has already retired from T20Is and Tests. While he retired from T20Is on June 29, 2024, after leading India to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title, he bid adieu to the longest format of the game on May 7, 2025, ahead of the England tour.
