On Thursday, July 9, the Indian cricket team, led by Shreyas Iyer, suffered a major setback as bowlers Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy were ruled out for the remainder of the England T20I series due to hamstring injuries.
Speaking at the toss ahead of the fourth T20I at the County Ground in Bristol, the Indian captain, Iyer, has confirmed the development with Prasidh Krishna and Washington Sundar replacing the duo.
“We’ve got two changes, two injuries actually. Varun and Harshit go out, so Washington and Prasidh come in,” Iyer said at the toss
“Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy sustained hamstring injuries in the third T20I against England at Trent Bridge. The BCCI Medical Team has assessed them and ruled them out of the 4th and 5th T20Is,” the BCCI said in a statement.
For the unversed, Varun fractured his toe during the IPL 2026 season and had taken a short break, missing the recently concluded Ireland T20I series, which India lost by 0-2, India’s first-ever series defeat to Ireland.
On the other hand, Rana was ruled out of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign earlier this year with a knee injury that required surgery. He also missed the IPL 2026 season and had just returned to the team for the Ireland tour.
In the fourth T20I, India batted first and posted a total of 158/7 in 20 overs. Captain Shreyas Iyer was the star batter with an unbeaten 80-run knock off 49 balls with four fours and five sixes. England pacers Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue picked up two wickets each.
In the chase, England crossed the winning line with nine wickets in hand in 13.5 overs. Phil Salt (59* off 42) and Harry Brook (79* off 35) were the top players as England sealed the series 3-0 with one more game left.
