Team India suffered a humiliating 125-run defeat to England in the third T20I of the ongoing five-match series at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Tuesday, July 7.
In the 202-run chase, India got bundled out for 76 runs in 11.4 overs, losing the game by a whopping 125-run margin as Iyer suffered a fourth consecutive defeat as a T20I captain. While Jofra Archer scalped three wickets, Josh Tongue picked up four wickets.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, the Indian skipper blasted the Indian players for their atrocious gameplay in the 202-run chase as none of the batters touched the 15-run mark. Iyer also emphasized that losing five wickets in the powerplay overs didn’t help the cause.
“It was atrocious. Losing by such a big margin isn’t acceptable. First things first, we have to accept this loss and go back to the drawing board. It wasn’t a 200 wicket,” Shreyas Iyer said after the game.
“Losing four in the powerplay didn’t create momentum, lost it there. You can plan a lot, once you come into the ground you have to adapt, figure out lengths. Hard lengths helped, we didn’t execute,” he added.
“When you’re chasing, you have to set patterns and our execution was off. Great opportunity to come back strong. We’ve played awful cricket but lots to learn as well. Players have to figure out ways to create impact. Every individual has to work on creating impact and taking responsibility,” he concluded.
After being tasked to bat first, England posted a whopping total of 201/7 in 20 overs. Phil Salt was the top scorer, amassing 70 runs in 44 balls while Sam Curran smacked an unbeaten 41-run knock off 24 balls.
India will next lock horns with England in the fourth T20I at the County Ground in Bristol on Thursday, July 9.
