IPL 2027: Kieron Pollard elevated as Mumbai Indians head coach

On Saturday, October 24, Mumbai Indians (MI) announced Kieron Pollard as their new head coach. Notably, this move came right after Mahela Jayawardene stepped down as the head coach of the franchise.

Pollard last featured in the IPL in 2023 and was part of all five of Mumbai Indians’ title-winning campaigns in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He also played a key role in the franchise’s two Champions League T20 triumphs in 2011 and 2013.

“It is a honour to take on the role of Head Coach of Mumbai Indians. MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me. Having experienced this journey as a player and then as a coach, I understand what Mumbai Indians stands for and the responsibility that comes with representing the Blue and Gold,” Kieron Pollard said.

“I am grateful to Mrs. Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and the entire MI family for their trust in me. I look forward to working closely with the players and support staff, building on the team’s legacy, helping our talent grow and giving the Paltan many more reasons to celebrate,” he added.

Pollard has also represented MI’s sister franchises in the MLC, ILT20 and SA20 over the years. He continues to feature in franchise cricket, having played for MI New York in the MLC and Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL this year. Earlier this month, the 39-year-old was picked by Joburg Super Kings at the SA20 2027 Auction.

“Pollard’s appointment reflects Mumbai Indians’ commitment to building on the team’s legacy while continuing to develop talent, strengthen its culture and pursue excellence on and off the field. His leadership will be rooted in the experience of having been part of MI’s most successful years, alongside the ambition to shape the team’s next chapter,” the MI official statement read.
