Former Indian cricketer Sadagoppan Ramesh has shared his views on reports of former Indian captain Rohit Sharma being reappointed as Mumbai Indians’ captain for the forthcoming IPL 2027 season.
Notably, Rohit was axed as MI skipper ahead of the IPL 2024 season, with Hardik Pandya taking over the captaincy stint. However, with Hardik not having good results, MI is reportedly considering reinstating Rohit as their skipper for the upcoming season.
“It’s a no-brainer that MI want to move on from Hardik Pandya as captain. But it’s doubtful whether MI will offer Rohit captaincy and, even if they do, whether Rohit will have the right mindset to take over as captain. Because we remember the bitter experience when he was removed as captain. So it remains to be seen if Rohit accepts captaincy again or whether he may also prefer taking over a fresh team after the mega auction,” Ramesh said on his Instagram handle.
“MI may also think twice about going back to a Rohit that they only removed from captaincy. However, if Rohit does become MI captain again, life will come full circle. After all, he was removed to make Hardik the captain, and now he’ll replace the same Hardik as captain,” he added.
Further, the former opener reckoned that MI’s think tank should consider captaincy options like Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma besides Rohit Sharma. While Bumrah and Suryakumar have experience captaining India and Mumbai Indians (MI), respectively, Tilak Varma is yet to lead a team at either the international or IPL level.
“There is a strong possibility of MI appointing Suryakumar Yadav based on his recent success at the T20 World Cup. Otherwise, they could think of making Bumrah the captain for next season, considering his leadership of India in the famous Perth Test win and his innumerable contributions in helping them win titles, especially with his captaincy aspirations,” said Ramesh.
“Lastly, they could go the youngster route and think of trying out Tilak Varma for one year. He has started being India’s vice-captain,” he concluded.
