Former Indian opening batter and analyst Wasim Jaffer has showered praise on the Indian captain Shubman Gill, calling him an all-format player. Notably, Jaffer’s comments came after India’s eight-wicket win over the West Indies in the first ODI in Trivandrum.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffer asserted that Gill would directly walk into any T20I team outside India, thanks to his clinical performances across formats. Gill played a pivotal role in the first ODI against the West Indies, scoring a match-winning 110-run knock off 108 balls.
“He is an all-format player. It’s unfortunate that our T20 team is so strong that Shubman hasn’t been able to make a place for himself. In any other country, Shubman would walk into the T20I team,” Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.
“He is a wonderful batter in this format. I feel that Shubman Gill will carry Virat Kohli’s legacy. He is a very good captain and is showing such maturity at a young age. These are very good signs for Indian cricket,” he added.
Further, Jaffer heaped praise on the veteran wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who scalped four wickets to emerge as the player of the match in India’s comfortable victory. He went on to state that Kuldeep created the difference after the West Indies batters got off to a great start.
“First of all, it was nice to see him play and that he got a chance in the XI. This is the difference Kuldeep Yadav makes. West Indies got such a good start, and after that, if you have a quality wrist-spinner, he can change the game. Very happy to see Kuldeep Yadav play and perform. I think somewhere a lot of pressure must have been off him. He gets matches between breaks. He showed what he can do,” he concluded.
