India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has asserted that the Indian bowlers are used to playing such pitches, having known the dimensions of the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Notably, his comments came after India’s seven-wicket win over Afghanistan in the first T20I.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Varun, who scalped a wicket in the first T20I, reckoned that there are certain lengths that work on the Delhi surface, adding that the Indian bowlers stuck to their plans and it worked out well.
“Yeah, so we have been used to playing on such pitches and we know the dimensions in Delhi. It is not a big ground. So, there are certain lengths that you have to hit and we were initially given the stats: these lengths work on this ground and these lengths do not work on this ground. So, we stuck to our plans and it worked out,” Varun Chakravarthy said at the post-match press conference.
Further, Varun showered praise on the dashing Indian opener Abhishek Sharma for his explosive 82-run knock and the 121-run partnership with Ishan Kishan. India sealed the deal, chasing down the 157-run target in 13.4 overs with seven wickets in hand.
“While sitting in the dressing room, I was just telling someone that, against our team’s batting line-up, you can’t bowl spin. So, if you bowl spin against our batting line-up, they’re just going to smack left, right and centre. We are just so used to playing spinners,” he added.
“So, yeah, one of the best batting line-ups we have, our top eight batsmen. Anyone can take on any spinner in this world. I have personally bowled against them, played against them. I know how hard it is,” he noted.
Unfortunately, Varun has been ruled out of the remainder of the Afghanistan T20I series due to a side strain.
