Indian skipper Shubman Gill has expressed his disappointment over Indian middle-order batters failing to create an impact in the middle and death overs in the second ODI against England at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Thursday, July 16.
Speaking at the post-match presentation after India’s four-wicket defeat in the second ODI, Gill has slammed the middle and lower middle-order batters for not creating partnerships after being in a good spot at one stage.
“Quite disappointing, to be honest with you. We thought 300, 310 would be a good total after 25 overs. We were at a good position. But, we lost too many wickets in the middle overs. I mean, our tailenders are not the best batsmen. But I think we expected a bit more from our lower middle order and we were not able to capitalize on the start that we got. But hopefully, the next time we get there, we’ll try to build some small partnerships and take it on from there,” Shubman Gill said after the game.
“I mean, 240, we always knew, if we would have had 300, close to 5.5-6, we knew maybe we could produce a false shot out of him (Root). But 4.5-5 runs per over, he’s the master of these kind of totals. We just couldn’t produce any false shot out of him,” he concluded.
In the second ODI, India managed to post a respectable total of 233 runs in 44 overs after being tasked to bat first. Virat Kohli (65) and Shreyas Iyer (66) were the top scorers in the first innings while Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson racked up three wickets each.
In the second innings, England crossed the winning line in 44.1 overs with four wickets in hand. No.3 batter Joe Root was the top scorer with his unbeaten 99-run knock off 133 balls. The series is currently levelled 1-1.
The third ODI between India and England will be played at Lord’s, London on Sunday, July 19.
