Indian skipper Shreyas Iyer has opened up on Team India’s 0-4 T20I series defeat after a 56-run defeat to England in the fifth and final T20I at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on Saturday, July 11.
Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony after the T20I series defeat, Iyer has asserted that the team needs to adapt to different conditions, especially overseas, adding that conditions kept changing from the first game of the series.
“Lot to take out of the series. Conditions, awareness, adaptation. This was the best wicket we played on, the approach was different when we batted. Conditions kept changing from match one. We need to be aware and adapt as professionals,” Iyer said after the game.
Furthermore, the Indian captain also asserted that there were too many fielding lapses throughout the series. Additionally, he reckoned that 220-225 would have been easier target for them to chase down in the final T20I.
“Important to communicate what we could’ve done better. Fielding plays a key role and we need to work on it. Especially overseas, with different dimensions in grounds. We dropped catches which cost us, 220-225 we might’ve chased down but not to be. We lost wickets in cluster. We were going after the chase rather than building partnerships. We have to target bowlers, take time. Their execution was spot on. Buttler was sensational, Brook changed the momentum. That partnership steadied the ship,” Iyer concluded.
Delving into the details of the final T20I, England was tasked to bat first, and they posted a whopping total of 257/3 in 20 overs. Jos Buttler (131) and Harry Brook (95*) were the star batters in the first innings.
In the second innings, India could score only 201/8 in 20 overs. Ishan Kishan (56) and Tilak Varma (53) were the top batters, but their knocks went in vain. Sam Curran was the star bowler with a three-wicket haul.
